How To Locate A Satellite Degree/Position Manually Without Sat-Finder

Do you want to locate a satellite degree/position for your satellite TV dish but don’t own a Sat-finder? Don’t worry this post will give you all the required guides and help you need to manually locate a Satellite Degree/Position.

Locating the right position for your satellite Dish is really a fundamental basis for any Installer and statistic shows that over 70% to 80% of Installers in Nigeria do not use any sat-finder to locate a satellite degree/position, they enjoy and learn to do it manually of which I am one of them.

In this article I will be explaining how we can locate any degree we are sorting for, I know we might have heard some regular positions like Eutelsat 36East, Nilesat 7west, Abs 3west, etc.

Every installer should have a foresight of where and how a satellite dish should be positioned, even if you are using a sat-finder you won’t need to trail a west positioned satellite in East.

Firstly let me explain the basic cardinal points just like we learned in our Geography, we have four cardinal points which are North, West, East, and South.


From the above image, we see the labeling of the points and its positions but for Satellite TV dish installation we mostly work with either west or east positions, we can see the west position is at the left while the east position is at the right side of the cardinal point but it doesn’t mean that any point we are standing at; east should face right and west face left,

First and foremost, you must locate the North Pole before you can be able to locate the true west and east directions and to do this you need a compass, thanks to Smartphone because most comes with digital compass or you can simply look around the area to see if you can find an already mounted satellite dish; from there you can know the actual direction you are working on.

Now that we have learned about positions and directions how can I locate Satellite Degree?

Here is must-know information in locating your degree, ‘the lower the degree in East (for e.g. 3, 4, 7 degrees), the higher you elevate your dish’ this simply means the lower the degree the higher you raise your dish in the sense that, your dish faces up.


The lower the degree the higher you go and movement is to the right (note that the higher means elevating the dish to face up not moving the pole higher, for instance, let’s say you already tracked 36degrees and want to migrate to 20degrees, you will need to adjust your dish (standing at the back) face up and move to the right,

Another example is when you have already tracked 65 degrees from 36 degrees you will need to bring the dish down i.e. face down and moving to the left, you should always be at the back of your dish while tracking.

But for the west the lower the degree you move to the left and the higher the degree you move to the right, just vice versa but the upward adjustments carry the same rule: which is the lower the degree the higher you elevate the dish.

Whichever way you point your dish depends on where your Location as your east in Onitsha can be different from how my east will face in Ibadan though they all point to the same satellite as there are 360 degrees on a compass, there are 180 degrees to the West, and 180 degrees to the East.

Satellites are in orbit over Earth’s equator and there is what is known as Azimuth when locating positions for different satellite degrees in different positions, Azimuth means how far around from North you need to point or the direction in relation to North.

But this is best understood when using a pointer or a compass though this is a topic for another day as we want to learn it manually without a compass.

Note: the lowest degree of west and east is zero (0) and the highest degrees is 180 which implies 2degree east is close to 2degrees west and 180 degree west is close to 175 degrees east. You can carry out the practical yourself for better understanding.
