Unilorin Postgraduate Programmes Admissions 2020/2021

The University Of Ilorin is inviting applications from the suitably qualified candidates for the Unilorin Postgraduate Programmes admission for the 2020/2021 academic session.

Interested candidates should read this post properly for the available courses and eligibility before proceeding to the application process.

Unilorin Postgraduate Programmes Offered

  1. Ph.D. Degree Programmes

This programme is for the candidates who possess M.A; M.Ed.; M.Eng; M.Sc.; LL.M; M.Comm.H; and M.P.H degrees, with at least 60% or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) score in their Master degree programmes.

The Ph.D. degree programme runs for at least 36 calendar months and at most 60 calendar months for full-time candidates and a minimum period of 48 calendar months and at most 72 calendar months for part-time candidates.

For this programme relevant Courses will be taken for studies where prescribed and a Thesis is required at the end of the Ph.D. programme.

  1. M.Phil /Ph.D. Degree Programmes

This programme is for candidates who scored between 55.00 and 59.99 percent and it is available only to full-time candidates.

The M.Phil /Ph.D. Degree Programmes runs for at least 12 calendar months and a maximum period of 24 calendar months and a Dissertation is produced after the research work.

M.Phil /Ph.D. candidates are eligible for conversion to Ph.D. candidature, following a progress assessment report to be made by a Panel of Examiners after the first session of registration.

Candidates are expected to score not less than 60% (aggregate) at the end of the first session in order to be eligible for conversion for the Ph.D. program,

  1. Master Degree Programmes

The M.A.; M.Ed.; M.Eng.; M.Sc.; M.Com.H., LL.M, and M.P.H. degrees run for at least 18 calendar months and at most 36 calendar months for full-time candidates OR at least 36 calendar months and a maximum period of 48 calendar months for part-time candidates and a Dissertation is produced after the research work.

  1. Postgraduate Diploma Degree Programmes

This programme is available for Third class (honors) and it runs for 12 calendar months which will commence on 2nd October and end on 30th September of the upper year.

After the date of first registration, the 12 calendar months start counting automatically and as well lapse automatically at the expiration of the prescribed maximum duration for each programme. Although, candidates are allowed to apply for an extension of not more than 12 months, in the first instance, subject to a maximum of two such extensions.

Eligibility for Unilorin Postgraduate Programmes Admissions

General Requirements:

  • All Certificates should be presented at the purchasing point of the application form.
  • NYSC Discharge Certificate/Exemption Certificate must be presented on or before September 30th, 2019.
  • The application form is expected to be submitted online alongside with the scanned copies of the candidate’s credentials.
  • All supporting documents mentioned above with the hard copy of the application form should be forwarded between Friday, 10th May 2019 and Friday 28th, June 2019, to:

  • While the Transcripts of Academic Records submission should be to the Head of Department of the candidate’s aspiring department.
  • The Unilorin Postgraduate School disclaims liability for any misdirected transcript.
  • All candidates are required to possess 5 O/L Credit passes of which English Language and Mathematics must be inclusive.
  • Candidates who graduated from the University of Ilorin or other recognized universities and are aspiring for Masters Degree Programme in Unilorin must possess at least Second Class Honors Degree (Lower Division) and should apply for programmes in which they obtained their first degrees. Although, candidates applying for programmes outside those in which they obtained their first degrees may be admitted, presuming they satisfy Senate in a qualifying examination which will be conducted.
  • Second Class Honors Degree (Lower Division) is the minimum class of Degree required from every applicant for all academic programmes regardless of the institution where the Bachelor’s degree is obtained.
  • Every candidate must request for their official Bachelor’s degree transcript to be sent to Head of Department of the aspiring department, before the expiration of the stated deadline Friday 28th, June 2019.
  • Ph.D. degree programme aspirants must possess a relevant Master degree from Unilorin or any other recognized University, with an average weighted score minimum of 60%.

  • Short-listed candidates are expected to satisfy the Postgraduate School in the qualifying interviews and assessments by the relevant Department. Candidates are hereby, advised to interact with the aspiring department to ascertain the date of the interview for the Ph.D. degree programme.
  • All Candidates must request early for the official copy of their academic transcripts to be forwarded to the Head of Department of their various aspiring departments for the purpose of this admission and before the expiration of the stated deadline regardless of the Institution where the Master degree was obtained.
  • All Higher Degree aspirants who attended foreign Universities, where English is not the language of instruction must submit their evidence of English Language proficiency, e.g. TOEFL or IELTS scores obtained within the validity period of such certifications to the Postgraduate School.
  • Postgraduate Diplomas and Master degree Programmes applicants will write a qualifying examination; irrespective of the obtained class of degree, Unilorin candidates with a First Class and Second Class, Upper Division (Honors) are exempted from this written assessment.
  • International aspirants (Candidates who are domiciled outside Nigeria, and non-Nigerians, applying from outside the country) will not partake in the qualifying examination. Although, Doctor of Philosophy programmes international applicants will be required to submit a proposal of 5 pages maximum, giving details of what research they intend to carry out and should be forward electronically to pgschool@unilorin.edu.ng before or on 28th June 2019.
  • All Full-time programme aspirants are required to present a letter of release from their employers at the point of registration.

Programme Specifics

Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science

  • Applicants must possess a minimum of first degree in any of the following disciplines from a recognized University: Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences or the Humanities.
  • HND in Computer Science or Engineering from recognized Polytechnics with a minimum of Lower Credit; and
  • HND in any other discipline different from those in (ii) but preferably from Sciences or Social Sciences with a minimum of Lower Credit from a recognized Polytechnic or equivalent Institution, with at least one year cognate experience.

Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics

  • Open to applicants who have a minimum of an honor’s degree from a recognized University in any of Science and Social Science disciplines;
  • Open to applicants with HND in Statistics obtained from a recognized Polytechnic with a minimum of Lower Credit.

M.A. Peace and Security Studies

  • This programme is OPEN ONLY to participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) of the Institute of Security Studies, Abuja.

M.A. Peace and Strategic Studies

  • This programme is OPEN ONLY to participant in the Executive Management Course (EMC) of the Nigerian Army School of Education (NASE), Ilorin or any other equivalent programme approved by NASE.

M.Sc. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)

  • The programme is OPEN ONLY to participants of the Natural Water Institute, Kaduna.

Application Fees for the Unilorin Postgraduate Programmes

Application fee for all Unilorin Postgraduate Programmes is N25, 000.00 only for Applicants within Nigeria and $200.00 only for International Applicants.

Examination Date for all Master and Postgraduate Degree programmes applicants will be on Saturday, 6th July 2019, at 8.30 a.m. prompt at the below-listed venues

Important Notice

  • The Qualifying Examination will be on July 6, 2019, and no formal letters of invitation to candidates for the Qualifying Examination.
